We all know about the benefits of going off-grid. In fact, you can read about them right here on this website! One of the perceived disadvantages of doing so is the cost. Many people assume that solar installations cost a small fortune. They also think that the return on their investment won’t happen for at least 20 years.

These days, going off-grid is cheaper than you might care to think. First of all, the cost of solar installations is dropping each year. In 2015, for example, it was 3% cheaper to get solar power system fitted than in the previous year.

And with over a million homes using solar energy, that figure is set to double soon.

So, how can you go off the grid without selling an arm and a leg to fund such an ambitious project? Well, the answers are quite simple and obvious, believe it or not!

Used solar panels

You only have to look on classifieds websites to find that there are a plethora of secondhand panels you can buy. So, if you need a large array of PV panels, you could save a significant sum.

Generous discounts for bulk battery purchases

You will no doubt know that solar energy needs to get stored in batteries. Some people assume the cost of buying a bank of batteries is high. But, if you buy from the right sources, you can get volume discounts.

Grants and loans

Not everyone has the funds to pay for a large-scale solar installation at their home. The good news is you might be eligible for grants and loans. That’s because the Department of Energy wants you to go solar and get off the grid!

Solar energy is growing in popularity as the infographic below shows. If you want to live off the grid, it has never been a better (or affordable) time to do so!
